Guide to Neurofeedback Therapy

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-drug approach to addressing imbalances in brainwaves. There are four main brainwaves: alpha, beta, delta, and theta. The goal of neurofeedback therapy is to regulate brainwave activity. Dysregulated brainwaves are associated with numerous symptoms. Research shows the efficacy of neurofeedback with ADHD, autism, migraine and tension headaches, insomnia, memory issues, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and more.

How does it work?

First, a quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) brain scan is performed to observe for dysregulated brainwaves. Dysregulated patterns identified by the QEEG determine which areas of the brain need support. During a neurofeedback training session, electrodes are placed on the patient’s scalp to monitor brainwave activity while watching a show or movie. If the brain is producing correct patterns, the show is bright and easy to see.

If the brain is producing incorrect patterns, the show is dark and hard to see. This is based upon operant conditioning: training the brain to produce correct brainwaves and rewarding it in doing so. Over time, according to the concept of neuroplasticity, your brain becomes more efficient at producing these correct brainwave patterns. This means the progress you achieve through training is cumulative and long-lasting.

Alpha, Beta, Delta & Theta Waves

Alpha waves are associated with a relaxed state. Imbalance of Alpha waves can be associated with:

  • Depression
  • Victim mentality
  • Excessive self-concern
  • Passive aggressiveness
  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Agitation
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Withdrawal behavior

Beta waves are associated with being alert and focused. Imbalance of Beta waves can be associated with:

  • Anxiety
  • OCD
  • Migraine
  • Tension headache
  • Insomnia
  • Obsessive thinking
  • Excessive rationalization
  • Poor emotional awareness
  • Worry/panic attacks
  • Chronic pain
  • Restlessness
  • Delta waves are associated with sleep. Theta waves are associated with falling asleep. Imbalance of Delta/Theta waves can be associated with:
    • Cognitive impairment
    • Impulsivity
    • Hyperactivity
    • Focus/attention issues
    • ADHD
    • Excessive speech
    • Traumatic brain injury
    • Dementia
    • Learning disorders
    • Autism/Asperger's
    • Memory issues

Adjunct Services Used with Neurofeedback to Enhance Results

BrainSpan® bloodspot testing is used to assess brain nutrient deficiencies and inflammation levels. Hair Elements analysis from Doctor’s Data tests for heavy metal toxicity which can affect brain health.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which helps increase oxygen delivery to the brain and body. This boost in oxygen can promote healing, reduce inflammation, and support better brain function. When combined with neurofeedback, HBOT can enhance results by helping the brain
become more responsive and efficient during training.

Low level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate celluar activity and improve blood flow to the brain. This can help reduce inflammation, support healing, and enhance brain energy levels. When used with neurofeedback, LLLT can improve brain responsiveness and make the training more effective by helping neurons communicate better.

How do I get started?

  1. Contact our clinic to receive a complete health history questionnaire via email. You can call or text 507-752-7650 or email [email protected]. After we review your questionnaire, we will contact you to schedule an initial consult.
  2. Meet with our neurofeedback team for an initial consult. If the program is a good fit, we will schedule an evaluation visit.
  3. Attend your initial evaluation visit, which will include QEEG brain mapping and instructions for simple BrainSpan® blood testing and Hair Elements lab testing.
  4. Meet with our neurofeedback team for a Report of Findings appointment, where we review testing results and present your customized care plan and payment options.
  5. If you choose to proceed, we will schedule your program and begin treatment.
